First home in Lahaina to rebuild

Lahaina resident Gene Milne, whose home was under construction when it was destroyed in the Aug. 8 fire, has started rebuilding the first house in the Lahaina Impact Zone. He says he is doing 95 percent of the work himself to construct the ‘ohana, which he is hoping will be completed in six to seven months. “Getting started here, putting nails in boards, getting stuff done is huge for my healing,” he says. “I can feel like there’s an end, even though it’s a long way to go, there’s still an end to this tragedy.”

WATER ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENT - AREAS UK-2A, UK-4, LAH-1, LAH-2

The Department of Water Supply has removed the following areas from the Unsafe Water advisory:

  • UPPER KULA - AREAS 2A, 4
  • LAHAINA - AREAS 1, 2

Water serving buildings and homes in these areas has been determined to be safe for unrestricted use, effective immediately. Residents may search for their address using the interactive Water Advisory Map to confirm if their residence is outside or within the water advisory area. Go to: mauirecovers.org/recovery/utilities.

Water may have stagnated in the lines of homes and buildings within the areas listed above. The Department of Water Supply recommends customers flush the lines to remove any standing water in plumbing and pipes due to non-use. Lines may be flushed by opening valves and letting the faucets run for at least 10 minutes; this will help replace any stagnant water in the lines with fresh water.Remaining areas in Upper Kula and in much of the fire-impacted areas in Lahaina remain under the Unsafe Water Advisory until further notice. Customers within the advisory area should continue to NOT drink or boil their tap water. For more info, visit mauirecovers.org/recovery/utilities.
